Onispela is the ruler of a dying land. In order to survive, he must lead his people from their homeland to another continent. The only problem is, Maharan is a land which is already occupied. With not enough resources or land for both their people, Onispela has no choice but to make room for his own.
Kari is an Elementi, who is still developing her powers. While visiting an island off the coast of Maharan where most of her kind resides, the island is attacked. Kari and her companions are charged with the task of warning others. At first no one heeds their warning, but soon all of Maharan is trembling from thousands of foreign boots on their soil.
Kari and her companions will not let the people of Maharan be exterminated without a fight. But it is not long before they learn, by a friend revealing his own dark secret, that the enemy's ruler has the advantage. With over nine-hundred years of experience and an unnaturally quick healing ability, Kari knows that the hardships of the months before were nothing compared to what she will face in the months ahead.
